It's either TOO expensive, cheap n nasty, or you can't find it here, so I need to look at overseas methods.
At one stage I thought I was onto a winner. I found an animal supplier that could supply bulk hay and wood shavings, at an unbelievable price. The wood shavings were $22 for an 80Litre bale, and the hay was $6.50 for HUGE bag.
Then it happened......they stopped supplying the hay for their business. I still use the wood-shavings, but only seldom, as it's for my Chinchilla.
I often wonder, that if and when I require the wood-shavings.....will they still supply it?
I was determined to find another hay supplier. And ....I did: Wish I hadn't though.
Because, buying hay from a trader off TradeMe ( it's like ebay ) was the worst thing for my guinea pigs.
I bought a total of 4 bags of hay from this trader , and before I knew what was going on with the ginny's...I was off to the vet and $100NZD later they all had to have the jab for mange mites.
Never before had I been struck with such a problem.
I learn't my lesson and that was never buy cheap nasty DIRTY hay.
I ended up using 2 and a half bags. I am still yet to throw the rest out . I dare NOT sell this on!

I notice that Animates, who seem to be the main pet chain here.....Are slowly, depleting their stocks of brands that I used to regularly buy. Is it me? but I would think items like chinchilla dust, alfalfa hay/blocks for the guinea's, and a shirt for my dog would be of use - ho hum!
I have come to the conclusion that Animates will supply me with their expensive hay and reasonably priced muesli pellets that the guinea pigs love SOoo much...
