PRE-ORGANISE YOURSELF

Develop a daily or weekly routine or roster for yourself. The more you get into routine, the better it can become a normality in your weekly or daily life.

I attend to the guinea's on a daily basis.
On days I work, it's a 6.30am clean-out. Or, between 8.30am-9.00am, on days that I don't work.
I prefer mornings.

I find it super-easy to look after my guinea pigs. If at first, I am totally organised!
I always ensure that I am organised a day prior, for the next day
( hopefully, this makes sense )

Example:
I start work early on Monday mornning. So, on Sunday, I must have all the food, containers, blankets, towels, cleaning gear etc.. ready at my fingertips. Because, come Monday morning. I don't want to waste time looking for all that I need.

Total clean-out time is 15minutes.

Morning Clean-out. Peanut and Phoenix in designated areas whilst main area being cleaned.

FOOD

All guinea pigs develop their own tastes.

Produce shopping is normally done twice a week

Hay & pellet muesli mix bulk shopping is normally done once a month

Silverbeet, Celery, Carrots, Corn, Cucumber, Beans, Brocoli, Apple, Pear, kiwifruit,
Appropriate loose lettuce are what I would typically feed them.

All food is rostered so that they receive a variety on a daily basis.

Fruit portions will be given every 3rd or 4th day only.

On summer days they are grazed outside. But DO NOT live outdoors.

Hay, pellets and water are always supplied on a daily basis

FEEDING

All the guinea's are feed atleast twice a day
Morning and afternoon
At night, after the spot check, I will top-up hay and check water bottles.

BATHING / GROOMING

Organized Bathroom Basin

FULL WASH

All my guinea pigs are usually bathed between every 6-7 weeks

I have a structured process where I use the basin in the bathroom for their main wash, the small tub is for their rinse, the assorted towels is too remove excess water, the hairdryer is for drying them off, the comb is for brushing the hair, nail clippers to cut long nails, and the scissors is to cut Peanut's hair ( if required ).

ALWAYES TEST THE WATER WITH YOUR HAND, OR ELBOW BEFORE ADDING THE GUINEA PIG IN, TO ENSURE NOT TOO HOT!

I will fill the basin in the bathroom to an acceptable level, with luke-warm water, add a drop of shampoo into the water, then place the little one in.

I give them a gentle thorough wash. Then I will pull them from the basin, and place into the tub of warm water to rinse them of the shampoo.
( Work in progress: Looking to purchase a double hose adaptor for the sink ).
After the rinse I remove them from the tub, place them on a pre-organised towel, and with the towel, remove any excess-water. Finally.. dry them off with the hair-dryer, and give a quick comb.

Back into the housing area.

HALF WASH

If I find that they are dirtier more than usual on there bellies and bums, on the odd weeks.
They will  have what I call a "half wash"
This is where I will grab there rinsing tub. Fill the tub with warm water, mix in the shampoo and give ONLY there bellies, legs, paws and bum area a clean, and then I will dry them off with a towel

I don't fully place them in the tub

CLEANING & WASHING

All the guinea pigs live inside.
I clean there indoor house everyday.
Seven-days-a-week.

I use towels and polar-fleece blankets, these are washed and hanged out everyday.
Laundry santizer, or Dettol is used in the final rinse.
This kills any bacterial in the blankets.

I always use a scoop of laundry powder and 15mls of santizer

I never use any kind of laundry conditioner in the wash

An antibacterial detergent is also used for cleansing the base and walls of the indoor house.
I wipe with a paper towel.

All bowls are also cleaned with an antibacterial liquid soap.
And are cleaned either everyday, or every second day.
I also have a dedicated wash brush for these bowls.
Wash brush goes into the dishwasher after every wash.

A Typical Washing Load

SPOT CHECK

Everyday, normally at around 5pm. I will give the areas a quick tidy-up. This means removing all soiled hay, food, pick up all droppings.

All is placed into a pre-organised bin. Where it will be emptied, the following day.
